Al Maha is the first ecotourism resort in the Emirates (winner of the World Legacy Award by National Geographic Traveller in 2004), and is hidden in the heart of a 27-square-kilometre desert nature reserve that shelters many indigenous birds and animals, including the Arabian Oryx for which it is named.
Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa is a one-stop destination in an exceptional environment for incentive groups and special events. This resort offers a wide range of traditional desert activities, from falconry to desert safaris on horseback and dune drives on 4x4 jeeps,
thus providing different opportunities of experiencing the dramatic splendour of the Arabian desert up close. End an exciting day with a traditional Bedouin camp dinner in the middle of the desert. All activities at the resort are supervised by dedicated Al Maha Field Guides – experienced conservationists who have extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna of the region.
In Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of UAE, stands the Ru'us al Jibal mountain range with its varied habitats and spectacular scenery. Rare Arabian wildlife species seek refuge in this range, including the Arabian leopard (perhaps!), Arabian tahr, caracal lynx and Blanford's fox.
Stone houses in old Shihu settlements (now deserted by local inhabitants) serve as campsites for the mountain trekkers, who must foot it to camp from the wadi at the base.
The local Shihu tribe have, over the years, abandoned their ancestral stone houses on the plateau and shifted to more modern accommodations in the wadi and townships below. They are, however, sentimental about their traditional homes and like to visit them occasionally.
Shihu houses in three villages are rented to mountain trekkers. These have since been renovated for the use of tourists. Not only is the local community receiving money through this operation, some are also trained as tour guides so that they play an active role in camping activities.
