Sustainable tourism in Morocco

Taroudant is often known as the "Grandmother of Marrakech" (but smaller and quieter). The old town offers such a wonderful experience of Moroccan life without being spoilt by tourism. It has a lovely warm climate all year round - it is especially tempting between November and March when the air fares are at their lowest (except for holiday weeks) and, of course, to escape the cold, grey skies of winter. Taroudant offers a wide variety of contrasting environments within a short radius: three different mountain ranges, fertile valleys, desert, rugged and sandy coasts.

Trekking or walking in Morocco offers a rich and colourful experience, allowing a privileged and unhurried contact with a world scarcely changed in a thousand years; friendly peoples and ancient cultures, spectacular scenery and remarkable refreshing activity. Morocco is a varied country, ranging from high mountains and deep gorges to vast sand seas, yet at the same time the annual snows provide water, so there are cultivated valleys, a blaze of spring blossoms and habitations in the remotest corner. Both in the huge panoramas and in the intimate details, the Atlas ranges offer a world of kaleidoscopic surprises. Organised trekking is available in the Western High Atlas near Ouirgane- a superb, unspoilt areas little frequented by travellers. This is a beautiful area which is situated 1 hour from Marrakech & 3.5 hours from Taroudant. Many of the valleys contain stunning hillside villages with luxuriant palm gardens watered by ancient irrigation systems, old "agadirs" (Berber castles), and a backdrop of snow-covered peaks in winter. You also stay in simple village houses and thus experience the legendary Berber hospitality.
