Sustainable tourism in Macao

Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. With the agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999. Macao lies on the western bank of the Pearl River estuary, it comprises the peninsula of Macao, the islands of Taipa and Coloane. The population of Macao is 449,198 (July 2005 est.) and the total area is 25.4 sq km. Macao represents an outstanding example of an architectural ensemble that illustrates the development of the encounter between the Western and Chinese civilisations over some four and half centuries, represented in the historical route, with a series of urban spaces and architectural ensembles, that links the ancient Chinese port with the Portuguese city. The historic district of Macao has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2005
Hengqin Island, the largest among the 146 islands in Zhuhai, southern China, sits adjacent to one of Asia’s fastest developing tourist destinations, Macao. With a mere 9.8 square miles of area, Macao has little room to grow. But Hengqin Island, more than triple the size of Macao, is ideally situated to provide resort and recreation facilities that will complement Macao’s urban nature and gaming focus.
Several integrated tourism zones under development will combine family-oriented attractions with luxury resort facilities. On the east side of the island, which is accessible by road from Macao, there is a theme park and waterfront hotel zone intended to serve as the main corridor of tourism linking China to Macao. On the opposite side of the island there is a more secluded waterfront resort around a newly created lagoon. Upscale resorts, including a luxury spa and two resort hotels are located along the mountainside overlooking the lagoon. Visitors will have access to private beaches, as well as several 18-hole golf courses. Though the total development covers more than 3,000 acres of land, Jerde arranged the districts on reclaimed areas along the outer edges to keep much of Hengqin’s natural hillsides intact.
