Sustainable tourism in Cambodia

In recent years, the Royal government of Cambodia has given priority to development of tourism industry, focusing on cultural and eco-tourism in order to promote the advancement of national economy and rapid poverty alleviation. Cambodia has officially set up protected zones of more than 3 million hectares of land, or 18 percent of the surfacearea of the country, and 30 percent of its forest- covered land. All can be used for developing eco-tourism.
According to a Royal Decree dated November 1, 1993, the Tonle Sap area has been officially listed as a protected zone for eco-tourism. Tonle Sap Lake in the area has a great potential for eco-tourism, such as water bird area and fishing villages whose scenery are of enchanting beauty. In addition to the Tonle Sap eco-protected area, the authorities have also set up seven national parks for developing eco-tourism that enjoy waterfalls, mountains and valleys.
